Art Conservator
Julia Korner is an independent art specialist, based in West London, England. She established her private studio in
1985, when she became a part-time employee of Christie's, the international auctioneers. Her business focuses on
the conservation of paintings, polychrome sculpture, and
frames and over-mantles, as well as on the making of gold leaf and gesso frames to order, and, unusually,
makes use also of her extensive range
of eighteenth century book binding tools to enhance the decoration of such frames.
|
Her work for Christie's involved establishing its Maritime Department. Through her own efforts and those of her colleagues,
the department became pre-eminent in its field with sales in London, New York and Amsterdam.
|
Julia left Christie's in 1997 after a career of nearly 20 years as a paintings specialist, with
extensive knowledge of Old Masters, of British Victorian and of European and American paintings
of the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries.
Julia continues to advise museums, corporations and private collectors on enhancing and conserving their collections and
is a member of the British Association of Paintings Conservator Restorers (BAPCR), the United Kingdom Institute
for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (UKIC) and the Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG), to name but a few.
Julia Korner Fine Art undertakes work in the following areas:
|
Purchasing Agent
Julia's credentials, knowledge of the market and her sensitive handling of confidential information make her a popular
choice for a number of international collectors.
Conservator of paintings and frames
Julia is a dedicated and keenly sensitive conservator of paintings and frames. She only carries out conservation work if the
piece requires it, restoration for restoration's sake is not her style, as witnessed by the
conservation page illustrating some of her work.
Valuations
Julia is renowned for her extensive knowledge of pictures, with a particular bent towards the maritime
field, and has become a valuable source for clients seeking to fill gaps in their collections as well as to obtain up-to-date valuations of
existing works of art. She continues with this work for a range
of private and institutional clients from her West London office and studio.
As Huntingdon Fellow of the Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia, America's National Maritime Museum,
Julia was heavily involved in cataloguing its vast and varied collection, in carrying out condition reports and valuations,
in deciding what should be sold and in giving advice as to the aims and strategy the museum should consider.
Education
Julia is an experienced lecturer in the practicalities of restoration as well as in the general history of art.
She lectures for Christie's Education, the Sotheby's Institute,
the National Art Collections Fund (NACF) and the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS).
